We talked to our neighbor last night to find out about the bee situation. Her story was quite...fantastic. I doubt it's true, although I have no doubt she thinks it's true. I think her knowledge is at least third-hand, so it' probably been misinterpreted at least a couple of times.
She says that a local beekeeper came out to check on the bees. She claims that they are indeed killer bees. But the wild part is, she claims the beekeeper says there should be a "main nest" the size of someone's living room within about half a mile.
Maybe I'm naieve, but a beehive the size of someone's living room!? That's a "tall tale" even for a Texan.
I think I know which beekeeper they called (there aren't many around here), so I'm going to give him a call and find out for myself. Our neighbor won't hardly let her children outside out of fear of killer bees. This is getting ridiculous. It seems like if there were really a livingroom-size nest of killer bees around, the police, county health department, or someone would have let the community know what was going on rather than relying of word-of-mouth.
