Special treatment for cops?

This site has moved to robert.williamsonline.us.

I am not sure what I think about this. There is federal legislation pending that would recognize the right of law enforcement officers to carry concealed handguns nationwide. Many pro-gun-rights groups oppose it, but some (like the NRA) support it.

Those who oppose it say that it is a double standard. It implies that police are somehow better than the other citizens, and more trustworthy.

I agree with that. I believe it is unfair. On the other hand, evidence shows that laws permitting concealed carry strongly reduces crime. So I am quite pleased with any legislation that increases the number of handguns carried by law-abiding citizens.

I wonder what would happen if a town like Kennesaw, Georgia decided to certify all its residents as law enforcement officers?

Also, I wonder if a constitutional case could be made that this bill violates equal protection, and if we could force the right to be recognized as applicable to all citizens?
