Career Decisions

This site has moved to robert.williamsonline.us.

I applied for a job at Nokia a few weeks ago. I had a phone interview, but nothing else. I know I was qualified for the job (C++ developer); I suppose they just found someone they liked better. I'm sure they got lots of resumes.

I found out about that job through my friend Barry, who works at Nokia. Thursday night my phone rang and it was Barry's boss. She wants me to come in for an interview late next week! It's not the same position as I originally applied for, but she had talked with the guy who did the phone interview and knew something about me.

This really got me to thinking whether I wanted to change jobs or now. There are lots of reasons to stay, and lots of reasons to go.

I would definitely have to move; it's too far of a commute from Bells to Irving. That means moving away from my family, my church, and the few friends we have around here. Plus just the effort of moving, not to mention the fact that we are just now getting somewhere on painting our house, landscaping, etc. I hate the thought of starting over.

And as far as my job, right now I do full lifecycle development. The new job, it sounds like, would be strictly coding. I like to code, but I also like to design architectures. Here, I'm a big fish in a small pond, and it's disturbing to think of reversing that.

But there's no doubt that Nokia will be more stable in the long run, and that it's probably a better place to work. And the DFW area certainly has more opportunities for social events, churches, better schools, etc.

Tough call. An elder from my church is fond of saying "when your values are clear, your decisions are easy". I think he's right, but my values are not clear in this. So my decision is anything but easy.

Of course, I might not even get an offer from Nokia, or it might be too low of an offer to offset the increased housing costs in DFW. So maybe I am agonizing needlessly. I almost hope so.
