We drove from Bells to Slidell this weekend. We left at noon and rolled in at 11:00 or so. Unfortunately, Joshua didn't stay asleep when we got him out of the car and decided to throw a party until 2:00 am.
We came here to see my mother in law graduate today. She received a Masters in Public Health from Tulane.
I have to say that I was a little bit disappointed in some parts of the commencement ceremony. For example, there was a jazz band instead of an opening prayer. One of the speakers decided to deliver part of her speech as a rap song. Maybe I'm strange, but I really expected the ceremony to be more dignified. It's one thing if the student cut up, but it's entirely different for the ceremony to be kind of informal. The program for the ceremony was filled with all sorts of information about the rich and dignified traditions that go into ceremonies, but the attitude did not reflect that.
I do have a funny story to relate. Like most universities I know of, Tulane had a unified commencement ceremony followed by individual departmental ones. At the departmental ceremony, I wound up sitting next to a fairly attractive girl who told me she had just graduated the year before. She wasn't drop dead gorgeous, and honestly I doubt I would even recognize her if I saw her in a crowd.
She made some small talk with me during the ceremony - just the typical stuff. Every time she said something to me, my wife (who was sitting on the other side of me) just started fuming. I was wearing a wedding ring and sitting next to my pregnant wife, who was holding our child, so there's no possible way this girl was flirting with me. Just polite conversation. But it sure did make me feel good to see my wife jealous over me!
