Ebay to buy PayPal

This site has moved to robert.williamsonline.us.

EBay Inc. on Monday said it would buy PayPal Inc. in a $1.5 billion stock deal combining the dominant Internet auction house with the leading vendor of online payment services.

I don't like this. I prefer specialized, separate sites and tools that work together but are not merged. I suspect eBay will use this new power for evil, not good.

Will eBay continue to support PayPal for non-eBay uses? Or will the fees be adjusted to put other auction or shopping sites at a distinct disadvantage? What kind of data mining will happen? What if eBay started tracking all the purchases you made through PayPal (for purchases at other auction sites)? Or what if eBay makes some kind of adjustments in its TOS to give a strong preference to PayPal users?

I'm probably just paranoid. But that doesn't mean I'm wrong!
