ABCNEWS.com : U.S. Offers Deal on Iraq Resolution

UNITED NATIONS Oct. 17 -- ” Seeking to win a new U.N. resolution on Iraq, the United States has removed language explicitly threatening military action, while making clear Baghdad will face consequences if it fails to cooperate with weapons inspectors, diplomats and U.S. officials said Thursday.

Politics is a funny business. The US had to first threaten unilateral action to get Iraq to even start negotiating the unconditional return (get it?) of weapons inspectors. Then, once Congress authorized Bush to act unilaterally, we see deals being worked out with the UN. We can be multilateral now because we don't need to be, and everybody knows we don't. So they are all quite willing to work out compromises now.

Steven Den Beste predicted this a full week ago.

Like Den Beste, I am a bit confused why Bush is offering so many concessions, but I trust that he knows what he is doing. It's worked so far.
