McConnell Threatens Censure For Byrd's 'N'-word Outburst
If Democrats insist on passing a resolution censuring Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott for praising the 1948 presidential candidacy of one-time segregationist Sen. Strom Thurmond, Republicans will offer an amendment censuring West Virginia Democratic Sen. Robert Byrd for using a racist epithet during a TV interview last year, a top Senate Republican said Sunday.
"Any such resolution [censuring Lott) would be fully amendable and amendments would be offered based on statements by other members in the other party in the body in recent years," Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell told ABC's "This Week."
Good to see a powerful Republican with some backbone. Let's have it out.
Here's a website detailing the racist positions of some prominent democrats, although many of them are not Senators and therefore not censurable.
Let's blow this thing wide open. I'd love to see a Senate Resolution censuring Lott, Hollings, and Byrd, plus condemning the racist remarks by Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and others. Fair is fair.

Lott's underlying message on BET: "I'm sorry for what I said - to make up for it I'm going to run hard to the left". Is there any way we can move that Jan. 6 meeting up a little?

However, with his record looking so racist, with him voting against the Martin Luther King holiday, his record of campaigning for segregation in his college days, etc., then it would make sense politically for him to step aside from the leadership. Personally I hope he wins his fight though. His leadership makes it so much harder for the Republicans to be viewed as non-bigotted and opens them up to attacks from the moderates. Even Dubya, who's not exactly politically savvy, recognizes that he needs to shy away from Lott right now. Maybe I'll get lucky and he'll stay the senate majority leader. Makes it so much easier for the Dems in the long run, that I have to cheer for him.
