The Middle East Media Research Institute has a transcript of a show explaing the hows and whys and whens of beating one's wife.
Some notes:
You can only beat your wife for serious matters.
You have to give her "several months...a long time...not a day or two" to straighten up after you've warned her and then banished her from bed.
You have to use "not hard" beatings - which means you can't "leave fractures or wounds". You also can't beat her in the face. We know that because Muslim sages have said so in their books.
Beating your wife in very particular ways might also be excellent treatment for certain mental illnesses...but I'll let you read that for yourself.
